If you happen to follow any of my social media accounts, you may have seen I recently got a new puppy! He’s a border collie/spaniel mix rescued from a local foster. He weighs under 30lbs, which means I CAN TAKE HIM PLACES!
In the best efforts to get him socialized and happy with car rides, I’ve made an effort to bring him out with me as much as possible. This leading of course to the question: Where ARE the best places to take a new pup in Charlotte?
William Davie Park This is probably one of my favorite dog parks in Charlotte. It’s HUGE! There are several areas that are mostly shaded under the trees, then up the hill there is a sunnier open field. There is fresh water, and plastic swimming pools for pups to play in! Like most public dog parks, there are rules, such as no children under 12, rabies tags should be visible at all times, and no outside food allowed.
Shuffletown Park This is great if you are closer to the north side of Charlotte and don’t feel like coming down south to William Davie! Not as big, but I like that it’s wide open and flat. There is still a large shaded area for the hot summer days, but for the most part this feels like letting the dogs go free in a big baseball field! I liked being able to keep an eye on my dog vs chasing him across 5 acres!
Burtons in Blakeney There are SO many things I love about coming here, the food is INCREDIBLE. (Seriously, try the General Tso’s cauliflower; I’m still dreaming of it!) The staff is extremely friendly, they offer you a gluten free menu straight away if needed, and are sure to ask about any other food allergies when you place your order. But the reason this is falling in my top 5 places for a new pup is that the patio is located in the FRONT of the building! I came here for lunch on my own a few days ago, with the dog, and didn’t have to stress about leaving him outside while I ran in to snag a table. The hostess saw me coming and came right out and sat us on the patio! It has the zipper enclosure during the cooler months, so don’t worry, it’s a year round option for you and Fido!
Dreamchasers Brewery Waxhaw Gotta show some love for my southern most favorite spot outside of Charlotte! Located in an old fire station, this brewery is GREAT all year round, but especially in the summer time when the garage style doors are opened up! Did you know there was a short lived law in the Charlotte area that dogs were not allowed in breweries? Thankfully that law was reversed in September stating that dogs are now allowed back into breweries as long as no food is being prepared on premise.
Brewers at 4001 Yancey This is a southend hot spot for sure, the food is superb, and the beer list is EXTENSIVE! The “dogs in breweries” rule applies here of course, so you’d have to stick to the patio with your pooch; But the reason this one makes the list is that they have a small fenced in off leash area for your furry friend! Complete with waste station bags! A wonderful addition to most patio options!
I love that Charlotte is evolving into such a dog friendly city, and I can’t wait to find even more spots to enjoy with my new addition!
